Review: Banglasia 2.0

The film that was supposed to release in 2014, finally got approved to be showed in local cinema!

New government, new hope? Sort of, though Namewee mentioned that it has still needed to be cut before it was allowed to be shown. Fortunately, after watching it yesterday, those requested-to-be-censored parts were just muted (audio track) rather than visually cut. OK, I am not meant to be a spoiler but if you are interested to watch those censored parts, Namewee did a YouTube asking for justification from the authority that why those parts are censored, here.

Honestly, I watched that clip before heading to TGV 1st Avenue. I would rather say he is smart enough to use that clip as trailer or motivator to lure viewers to watch the film. You're good, bro.

Generally, I think this film is for Malaysian, by Malaysian. Ya, they really hired a Bangladeshi to star main role but you have to be a Malaysian or familiar enough with Malaysian geopolitical issues to under those jokes in the film. You could detect Lahad Datu incident, 1MDB scandals, 505 General election, Lynas plant pollution in Kuantan... Despite that it has being 5 years since these incident occurred, I believe most Malaysians are still sentimental towards them. In fact, if this film were to released back in 2014, his film may stir more emotion from general crowd especially some Malaysians who cannot take this film as just a comedy. Oh, if you are wondering why Namewee paired Lahad Datu incursion with Chinese New Year? Quick goolging this event and you get it that it began on the first day of Chinese New Year in 2013.

You should see familiar local comedy actors if you are more than 20 years old, such as Saiful Apek, David Arumugam, Yoo Ah Min etc. Well, if you are younger than 20, then I think Namewee is inclusive enough that he included some local famous YouTuber such as Joseph Germani, Ling BigYong, Jinnyboy etc...that's why I told you this is a truly local made movie SO GO AND SUPPORT LOCAL PRODUCTION!

The film is rated as 18 film due to its political and some sexual implicit content (you know Namewee's style of joke...) but overall, it is just a comedy, right?

Spoiler ALERT! There is epilogue after credit roll to reflect current political situation and I guess that's why it was called "Banglasia 2.0". That short section may be added last minute so don't be surprise when it ends, abruptly. Nevertheless, it is still a good movie for me.

Go!
